July 2019 Newsletter

Presidents Report

“Friends – Since our May Newsletter we held a successful fundraising opening night screening of Rocketman on 30 May which was attended by 130 Friends and guests.

Funds raised on that night go to the Friends of the Arts Gift Fund to grow the enduring fund which each year provides financial support for young talented and emerging Gold Coast artists and performers to help them pursue their studies and training.

Please note that Applications for support from the Gift Fund are open now and available on our website. Ask your friends and colleagues to contact us by email at friends@friendsoftheartsfoundation.org.au that they can go on our distribution list for these newsletters and special offers. You will note the more streamlined and device friendly format of our newsletters now.

We continue to offer these opportunities such as the recent Dangerous Liaisons Rooftop experience and they will be selling out fast. Look out for the Rooftop drinks and canapes for the Bell Shakespeare production of Much Ado About Nothing on Wednesday 4 September 2019.

Another function to look out for in the meantime, which is open to all, is our Morning Tea fundraising event on Monday 22 July from 9.30 am. There will be awarding of the Beverly McIlwain Scholarship by the Friends Gift Fund, a singer, a presentation from Griffith University and displays by Friends Queensland College of Art Honours student scholarship winners, and raffles.

I look forward to seeing you there.”

Ian Kennedy,
President

Previous Events

Rocketman

Our Rocketman movie night was attended by 130 of our Friends and their guests.

Tickets in our fundraising raffles were accompanied by a complementary pair of Star Glasses. The drinks and popcorn were a welcome bonus to enjoy the movie.

We raised $800 for our Gift Fund and applications close for 2019/20 on July 26th 2019.

Dangerous Liasons / Rooftop Experience

On Friday 14 June a group of Friends and guests enjoyed an exclusive opportunity to attend the performance of Queensland Ballet’s production of Dangerous Liaisons with pre show rooftop drinks and canapes.

The Rooftop drinks opportunity was spectacular as was the short walk to the theatre past the outdoor stage on a balmy winters evening. The ballet was described by some as the best they had ever experienced.

Special Note

Don Robertson was a long time supporter of the Friends. His farewell morning tea was at Runaway Bay and organised by Di McCormack, a close friend.

The small gathering all joined in stories of Don from his massive tie collection, with one for every occasion, to his swimming prowess.  Don was in the Pan Pac Masters Games in 2018 at the age of 93 as part of a mixed 50 metre freestyle winning team.

A true gentleman and a familiar face at The Arts Centre with Carol, the former café manager, leading the eulogies.  We are looking to celebrate Don and his legacy soon.
